Rescuers search for missing swimmer off Navarre Beach; water closed to public

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) - First responders are searching for a swimmer who went missing off Navarre Beach Tuesday morning.

Roughly a dozen witnesses saw a man of about 30 enter the water, according to Navarre Beach Fire Rescue Chief Danny Fureigh. The swimmer did not resurface.

"We feel certain that this is going to be a body recovery," Fureigh said.

The Navarre Press reports the man entered the water around 9:30 a.m., when the water was closed to the public ahead of Hurricane Michael.

The swimmer went missing about a quarter mile east of Navarre Pier. Fureigh said first responders would search up and down the beach for him hourly.
